This programme is sponsored by Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi.

Aim of the Programme:

Quality of social science research has been fallen short of expectations in terms of contribution to the better understanding of socio-economic processes and shaping of public policy. One of the major reason for this is the lack of adequate training on fundamentals of research methodology. ISID has been one of the pioneering research organisations promoting social science research in India through its databases on Indian economy, on-line research referencing of Indian Social Science Journals and Press Clippings etc. and also organising various training and capacity building programmes, conferences, seminars, workshops etc., and through other medium of dissemination of its research activities. This programme specifically aims to develop research capabilities of young social science research scholars from marginalised groups to strengthen their potential as future
researchers.

Content of the Programme:

Broadly, this is a multidisciplinary programme dealing with various aspects of qualitative and quantitative research starting from research design to writing and dissemination of research output. A week long programme consists of interactive sessions including lectures, group discussions, database familiarisation etc. The following are the key course components:
    Introducing the Basics of Research Methods;
    Research design: Identification of appropriate Research Questions, Effective Review of Literature, developing the conceptual framework, hypothesis formulation;
    Data collection and sampling methods: conducting field survey and field notes preparation, familiarisation of various secondary data sources, undertaking case study;
    Qualitative and Quantitative data analysis: basic statistical and econometric techniques with relevant software packages like Excel, SPSS and Stata;
    On academic writing and publication; and
    Practical sessions/assignments.
In addition, there will be special lectures by eminent academicians on various socio-economic issues such as industry, employment, education, health, poverty, inequality and other social sector issues. Overall, the programme intends to equip the participants to conduct their research more scientifically, i.e. with appropriate theoretical and empirical knowledge in a systematic way.

Who can Apply?

Young social science researchers and teachers from colleges, universities and research institutes belonging to the aforementioned social groups interested in pursuing research related to socio-economic issues will constitute the target audience of this programme. A batch of 25-30 participants will be selected on all-India level, based on suitability. Participants will get free boarding and lodging facility at the campus hostel on twin-share basis and to and fro 3-tier AC train fare by the shortest route will be reimbursed.
